During our visit to Tequila, we felt safe. In the city, I would say there isn’t as much to worry about. It is always recommended to stay vigilant and follow general safety precautions while visiting Tequila or any other destination.

The cartel has mostly moved to white-collar crimes. That’s not to say that violence isn’t their preferred method to make a statement. I’ve been there when they have protested an arrest and blocked roads and burned buses. “Luckily” it was in the very outskirts of Guadalajara.

Taking a look at the state of Jalisco’s homicide rates, which have steadily been on the decrease of the last 5 years. Actually, there were no recorded American homicides in Tequila. Data from the Department of State shows only 5 deaths of Americans were recorded in the state in 2022.

In a remarkable shift towards greater security, the number of kidnappings in Jalisco state has plummeted over the past five years, reaching single-digit figures.
